What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is the body's natural response to stress.

Affective and physiological symptoms of anxiety or stress may be experienced. This includes shakiness, a dry mouth, breathing difficulties, pounding of the heart, irritability, being over-aroused, and sweatiness of the palms.

Everybody experiences some degree of anxiety. When pathological, it is presented as Anxiety Disorders. Anxiety Disorders are the experience of severe and ongoing anxiety that leads a person to excessively worry, disrupting their daily activities. There are different categories of anxiety disorders, though they all have the potential of causing a person to experience a sense of losing control.

Anxiety in College

A survey consisting of demographic questions, the level of concern of daily life challenges, and a 21 question version of the Depression and Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS21) was completed by a sample of undergraduate students. The results revealed that the top three reasons for the prevalence and correlation of depression, anxiety, and stress in college students were:

Pressure to Succeed
Academic Performance
Post Graduation Success
Teamwork

Exercise and Anxiety

Exercise can assist in reducing the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Exercise is an affordable and accessible treatment to maintain a person's mental health. Physical activity increases diversion, social reinforcement, the experience of mastery, and decreases stress. A 10 minute to 45-minute workout has the power to temporarily boost the mood of someone experiencing a stressful or anxious situation.
